The official Pokémon Go site has released updated details about the Pokémon Go Plus, and it seems the wearable add-on will be much more useful than previously thought.
When the Pokémon Go Plus was first announced it was an accessory that would help Pokémon Go players keep on top of the action without having the app open constantly. However, the information presented at the time made it seem that the Pokémon Go Plus was very limited in what it could do.
That seems to have changed, as Serebii notes that the official Pokémon Go site has updated its information about what the Plus can do. According to Serebii, the Pokémon Go Plus will be able to have distance tracked for the hatching of Eggs and the collection of candy from Buddy Pokémon. This all works with the game in the background with the phone locked.
UPDATE: Some who pre-ordered the accessory have already received it and Serebii's Joe Merrick confirms some of the information.
At the time of its announcement, the Pokémon Go Plus could only allow players to catch Pokémon they already caught, grab items at PokeStops... annnnd that was it. You still had to have the app open to hatch eggs and to catch Pokémon you haven’t caught before.
So when Niantic decided to delay the release of the Pokémon Go Plus from July to September, it seemed Niantic was retooling the accessory.
When Nintendo and Niantic appeared at the Apple Keynote to announce Pokémon Go on the Apple Watch, and it was revealed the Apple Watch could track egg hatching progress, it seemed that the Pokémon Go Plus would not be up to par.
If the reported changes to the add-on pan out, then the Pokémon Go Plus, costing $35, will be a great accessory for trainers who want to play hands-free.
The Pokémon Go Plus accessory will release Sept. 16.
