After much clamoring, the tracking system in Pokémon Go has been updated to include the Nearby Function using PokeStops.
This new tracking system was implemented as a beta in California over the last few months and Niantic announced that the Nearby Function is coming to the rest of the United States and parts of Europe.
So how does the Nearby function work? It’s actually very simple.
1. Tap the area where the Sightings tab was. Pokémon Go players will see the tab open and show the different PokeStops in your area. If you have journeyed around your neighborhood, you should be able to recognize most of the PokeStops near your current location (around 200m).
The new Nearby function will show the Pokémon found in the area around that PokeStop. This makes it easier for players to find Pokémon by having them travel to a PokeStop instead of wandering around searching.
2. Tap on one of the circles and the distance you’ll have to walk to get to the PokeStop will appear in the form of the three footprints system that was used when Pokémon Go was first launched.
Keep walking until the footprints decrease from three to one, however, it should be noted that like before the decrease in footprints doesn’t work yet.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Rural areas with few PokeStops won’t benefit much from this new Nearby function. If all of the Pokémon in the PokeStop are caught, you may see nothing on the radar, which a lot of players are reporting.
Wild Pokémon not near a PokeStop will still show up if you walk around but won’t appear on your radar.
If there isn’t a PokeStop in range, the Sightings function (tall grass) will return, but reports say it only shows Pokémon within 50m of your location, which will spawn a Wild Pokémon before you even have to walk around.
