Pokémon Sun and Moon introduces a new battle mode called Battle Royal, which is essentially a four-trainer free for all.
Battle Royals in Pokémon Sun and Moon are unlike anything seen in a Pokémon game before and there are special rules and strategies that trainers will need to implement to become the King of Battle Royals.
Trainers can compete in Battle Royals with friends using the Festival Plaza but if you want to have a single-player experience with the new battle mode, you’ll have to head over to the Battle Royal Dome on Akala Island’s Royal Avenue.
Like the Battle Maison and Chateau in ORAS and X and Y, you can participate in battles against the AI. Unlike those two games, Battle Royals are split into Ranks from Normal to Master. One single victory in each Rank unlocks the next Rank until you win in each.
But the AI in Battle Royals are very difficult and use fully-trained Pokémon so you’ll need to learn the rules and implement some of our tips to become the number one Battle Royal trainer in Alola.
RULES
Every trainer chooses three Pokémon and once one trainer loses all three Pokémon the Battle Royal is over.
The winner is based on a points system that tallies how many Pokémon a trainer has KO’d and the amount of Pokémon left on their team.
In the Single Player Battle Royal, there are certain restrictions to your team. You can’t have two of the same hold item on your team or the same Pokémon. You also can’t use Special Pokémon like Legendaries.
TIPS
With the rules to Battle Royals the way they are, there are some strategies and ways to battle that trainers will want to implement and avoid. These types of battles are unlike Doubles and Rotation Battles so you will have to think and train a team specifically for Battle Royals.
Here are some quick tips to help you win Battle Royals.
- Attacks that hurt every Pokémon (like Earthquake) has their base power reduced during Battle Royals. These moves are still very good but it’s good to know that they may not KO a Pokémon when you expect them to.
- Switch-ins are not recommended. With three other Pokémon to worry about, wasting a turn to switch and then being targeted by two or more Pokémon is not something you’ll want.
- If you target a Pokémon and they are KOd by a different Pokémon, your attack will fail. Being able to predict wisely when a Pokémon will be knocked out is key for you to get those points.
- When a trainer’s final Pokémon is KOd the match does not end right there. The rest of everyone’s turn continues so multiple trainers can be KOd in one round.
- Speed matters in Battle Royals. Faster Pokémon are great to finish off weakened Pokémon after a round of attacks. But slower Pokémon are really good to try and finish off a trainer’s team because no other attacks are used that round.
- Stall tactics don’t really work. The AI is smart enough to know weaknesses and will gang up on a Pokémon.
