Sony's latest console, the beefed-up PS4 Pro, is finally out, and fans are wondering why it isn't as good as advertised. Even worse, some games that have been upgraded for the PS4 Pro are running worse than if they were played on a regular PS4.
As noted in Eurogamer, The Last of Us Remastered generally plays just fine on a PS4 Pro. Options include playing in 3000x1800 at 60fps or upscaling to 4K and playing at 30fps. Playing at 60fps will occasionally dip the framerate down a bit, but Eurogamer mentioned it isn't too much of an issue.
The problems come if you want to drop down into 1080p. There are no HDR features and the game downsamples to get from 1800 to 1080. This can cause framerate issues, which is mind-boggling to think about. How can running a game in lower settings on a more powerful console result in worse performance than what you'd get on a regular PS4?
Other games have been experiencing techinical issues as well, such as Skyrim. Eurogamer is reporting framerate dips in areas of Skyrim that you wouldn't be getting if playing on a PS4.
Another interesting problem comes with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Eurogamer notes that the PS4 Pro version is better in just about every instance compared to the PS4 version, but there are still some weird hiccups. Cutscenes look better, and generally the game plays better, but the first mission at least is at a locked 30fps on PS4 and not on PS4 Pro. This results in severe framerate dips on PS4 Pro, something the PS4 could handle with ease.
It should be noted that this all is likely due to software issues and developers still learning how to figure out the intricacies of the PS4 Pro. More patches are likely to come and fix these issues, but it still isn't a good look for Sony to have their shiny, new console performing worse than the previous version despite the impressive hardware upgrades. It should also be noted that not every game is experiencing these issues.
Eurogamer has presented its findings to Sony, and received a response that the company is aware of the issues, and is working on fixes already.
So what do you think? Are you surprised to see so many technical issues with the PS4 Pro at launch? Do you think this will all get smoothed over once some patches get released? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
