In a developer diary, the newly announced Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's creative director, Marcus Smith, has provided more information about how the action-adventure platforming title will utilize the power of the upcoming PlayStation 5’s solid state drive, DualSense Wireless controller, and 3D Spatial Audio. The developer diary has been uploaded on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel.
Smith starts off by presenting what will be the game’s plot, which basically is set on the premise of an evil villain who has accidentally damaged the fabric of space and time. This has caused numerous dimensional rifts to erupt all throughout the world. The Ratchet & Clank series has been mostly known for its penchant for providing players glimpses into exotic and uniquely designed worlds and landscapes. Through the power of the PlayStation 5, this will allow more leeway for the developers to go nuts on what they want to bring to players. “The number of objects in the world and the things to explore, the enemies around, the effects, everything is more, more, more. This is what we’re trying to do is build worlds that feel real and are bringing you in," Smith said in the video. "You’re exploring these brand-new spaces. And this is something that we never could have done on previous generations.”
More objects, places, and enemies mean more stuff to be loaded, which should be no problem for the PlayStation 5’s SSD. “It allows us to build worlds and project players from one place to another in near instantaneous speeds,” Smith added. Loading screens will be a thing of the past and the seamless transition from one world to the next in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be a common sight to see.
As for the console’s DualSense Controller, it is said to be “tailor-made" for Ratchet & Clank weaponry. Its tactile feedback lets the players feel the weapons’ power and also allows them to know how the weapon is behaving. “One of the examples of our weapons is The Enforcer. It’s like a double-barreled shotgun and it uses the adaptive triggers to give you tension," said Smith. "As you’re moving your finger down halfway, you can fire one barrel. If you pull it all the way down, you can fire both barrels.”
Last is the 3D Spatial audio, which will bring a whole new gaming experience and level of immersion when paired with the vast worlds in-game.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is currently in development for the PlayStation 5.
