The wait for “Rick and Morty” Season 2 has been interminable for fans of the hit Adult Swim series. The first season of “Rick and Morty” ended on April 14 of 2014, and the premiere of “Rick and Morty” Season 2 isn’t expected until Summer 2015. Other than a few clips shown at Comic-Con, “Rick and Morty” Season 2 is largely a mystery. But in a recent podcast interview with Jeff Rubin, “Rick and Morty” co-creator Justin Roiland (who developed the show with Dan Harmon, creator of “Community”) provided his grim appraisal of the “Rick and Morty” Season 2 premiere. Don’t worry though, Season 2 of “Rick and Morty” will still be amazing, despite his prognostications. Here’s why.
“Rick and Morty” Podcast Interview with Co-Creator Justin Roiland
While much of the “Rick and Morty Mastermind Justin Roiland” episode of The Jeff Rubin Show involves exactly how “Rick and Morty” was created in the first place (with a healthy 40 minutes also spent on angry rants directed at Nintendo’s poor consumer practices), Jeff couldn’t help but ask Justin Roiland for details on the upcoming Season 2 of “Rick and Morty.”
“Rick and Morty” Co-Creator Has Strong Feelings About Nintendo
While Justin Roiland wasn’t able to offer up much, he did fret about the “Rick and Morty” premiere. “I probably shouldn’t say this…” Roiland began, “the first episode back in Season 2 I fucking hate.” Asked to elaborate, Roiland had this to say:
“I only said that out of fear that I’m right, and then just lowering everyone’s expectations. As much as I’m sure everyone would be furious with me if that became some kind of story out of this interview, I would love it. Because then everyone’s going, oh, well, lower your expectations for the first one.”
Sounds like pretty bad news for “Rick and Morty” Season 2, right?
After some follow-up questions from Rubin, Roiland explains how feelings about an episode don’t always, or even often, translate to how the public will actually react. “I remember Dan being really nervous about the scammers episode, the “M. Night Shaym-Aliens!” episode… Harmon was really worried.”
The “M. Night Shaym-Aliens!” episode of “Rick and Morty”… is great.
Audience reaction, even to well-tuned shows like “Rick and Morty,” can be unpredictable. Often creators don’t have the outsider’s perspective that can allow them to fairly assess an episode’s quality, perhaps explaining away Roiland’s concern about the “Rick and Morty” Season 2 premiere episode.
That’s not just true with Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland of “Rick and Morty.” If you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes “South Park” documentary, “6 Days to Air” then Justin Roiland’s self-criticism likely sounds familiar.
While we don’t see it in the trailer for the documentary, a big part of the creative process for Matt Stone and Trey Parker on “South Park” involves a certain amount of self-doubt. There’s always a stage in the process where you’ve convinced yourself that you’ve made all the wrong decisions and your final product will be garbage.
Of course, sometimes you’re right. So what if Justin Roiland is right? What if the Season 2 premiere of “Rick and Morty” is awful?
Lucky for us, a season premiere indicates more episodes. That’s just TV science. Not to spoil anything for excited “Rick and Morty” fans, but there will be more than one episode of “Rick and Morty” Season 2. According to Roiland, “we have some amazing episodes… just phenomenal stuff we did.”
And we don’t have to take his word for it. Here are two animatics clips from “Rick and Morty” Season 2.

It seems sufficient to say that there’s a lot to look forward to in “Rick and Morty” Season 2. So yeah, Justin Roiland totally did say “I fucking hate” the beginning of “Rick and Morty” Season 2, which we’ve all been waiting to see for over a year. Let’s not worry about it.
“Rick and Morty” Season 2 will premiere this summer (an exact date is unknown, Roiland said “I don’t know if they’ve even actually slated” a premiere date) on Adult Swim. Even with adjusted expectations, it still feels like a long wait.
