One of last year’s most popular releases is getting cross-platform multiplayer support this week, Rocket League developer Psyonix confirmed on Tuesday morning, and it’s probably going to be a loooong time before anyone on PS4, Xbox One or PC can’t find a quick game of Rocket League .
It’s been more than two months since Psyonix announced plans to expand Rocket League ’s support for cross-platform play. Since the game’s launch last summer, PS4 and PC gamers have been able to face-off against one another; however, the Xbox community has been on something of an island, without support for any form of cross-platform play. But that’s finally changing on Tuesday afternoon when Rocket League becomes the first console title to support cross-platform play between the PC and Xbox One.
According to a press release, cross-platform support should arrive around 6:00 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday night. It’s not clear if players will need to download an additional patch for the game, or if the necessary changes will be made on the backend of Steam/Xbox Live, but we can’t imagine the entire rollout taking more than a couple of hours. The press release also includes a statement from Psyonix Vice President Jeremy Dunham on the company’s excitement to bridge the gap between PC and Xbox One. Unsurprisingly, the studio is pretty excited to extend its cross-platform support to Microsoft’s latest console.
“We're really excited to bring Xbox One and PC players closer together," Dunham said. "Cross-network play has been something that Xbox One gamers have been asking us for since the day we launched, and thanks to Microsoft's new cross-network policies, we're proud to give it to them.”
