Last Sunday, renowned gaming journalist Jeff Grubb stated in a podcast that Ubisoft is planning on canceling its free-to-play roller-skating sports title Roller Champions after the release of its third season, according to a message from his source. However, this statement was quickly seemingly put to rest by Ubisoft, with the publisher releasing an official statement on the state of Roller Champions and that the publisher fully supports the title. Check out the official statement from Ubisoft below made via Twitter.
According to the statement, Ubisoft is adamant that Roller Champions is not getting canceled and that the publisher “fully supports it.” The publisher also explained what was going on with the game’s development, with Ubisoft confirming that it will be extending the length of Disco Fever, the game’s currently ongoing season.
Ubisoft noted that this decision was spurred by two reasons. The first is for an upcoming patch that includes cross-invites, which will most likely allow players from different platforms to play Roller Champions together. The patch will be announced at a later date, or in Ubisoft’s words, “as soon as it’s validated and good to go.”
The second reason is for solving various player issues plaguing Roller Champions. As noted, the cross-invite patch will solve some of them, but other fixes are also set to be released throughout the remainder of the Disco Fever season, which would explain its overall extension. Ubisoft, in the end, also reiterated the “exciting stuff” planned for the next seasons of Roller Champions.
Rumors of the game’s cancellation are not all that unwarranted given the news that comes out from Ubisoft in the last few days. The publisher has confirmed that it canceled four games, including the ill-announced Ghost Recon Frontline, another Ubisoft attempt at a battle royale, Splinter Cell VR, and two more unannounced titles. It appears that Ubisoft is significantly rescaling its games development, especially as Skull and Bones has recently just been reconfirmed for a release following several years in development hell.
We will likely know more about Ubisoft’s further plans with Roller Champions and other games during the Ubisoft Forward presentation, set to air on September 10.
