Last year’s E3 was a huge one, especially for the developers of Sea of Solitude. The game certainly had an impact, and players were all hoping to see more from the upcoming title. Interestingly, the game finally has an official release date, and it is on July 5.
The unconventional indie title wowed the audience of last year’s E3 with its unique aesthetic appeal. It is truly a work of art, with expressive elements worthy of praise and applause. The presentation, surprisingly, was courtesy of Electronic Arts (also the publisher), a company not really known for its decisions to publish indie games.
The captivating exploration video game, which is being developed by Germany-based studio Jo-Mei Games, is releasing on July 5. It will be made available for Xbox One, PS4, and Windows PC (via EA’s Origin service) for only $19.99.
Sea of Solitude follows the story of a young woman named Kay. She is lost in a flooded urban landscape, with monsters plaguing every corner. The game heavily plays around a metaphor that alludes to loneliness. The game is indeed a noteworthy title, especially since it is hailed as one of the most highly anticipated experiences of 2019.
“Players must help Kay see below the surface and beyond, guiding her through a flooded city landscape in a deeply touching tale of darkness and light," EA said in a press release. "As waters rise and fall to reflect her own state of mind, Kay will meet fantastical creatures and monsters, learn their stories and solve challenges to rid the world of tainted memories.”
Jo-Mei’s CEO Cornelia Geppert said that the game is a “deeply personal project.” Players will be going through a journey packed with lots of challenges, as well as put themselves in a labyrinth environment. The press release also suggests that reward will offer emotional payoffs, most of which completely focus on “self-discovery and healing.”
Sea of Solitude is part of Electronic Art’s Originals program. According to the publisher, the program is designed to help shine “a light on some of the most passionate, independent, and talented game studios” across the world. Other games included in the program are Fe and A Way Out, which are, respectively, a novel exploration-based platformer and a co-operative two-player title about a prison escape.
