One of gaming's most iconic characters is about to turn 25 years old this year: Sonic the Hedgehog! While nothing has been officially announced by SEGA, it seems there will be some sort of anniversary game in the works. This rumor comes from Johnny Gioeli, a member of the band Crush 40. Crush 40 has been responsible with making many new songs for Sonic games over the past few years.
The leaked information comes from a post on Facebook, which was caught by website TSSZ News. A fan asked Gioeli about what Crush 40 had in store for fans. The exhange went as follows:
Q (from a fan): When will there be news about the Crush 40 album?
A (from Gioeli): We are planning a few performances for 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic. We “might” participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game…stay tuned…
The post on Facebook has since been removed, leading people to believe these rumors even moreso than before.
To further add fuel to the rumor flames, SEGA has also released an updated Sonic logo, reflecting on the 25th anniversary of their most famous mascot. The picture can be seen at the top of this article.
So what could a 25th Anniversary Sonic game be like? If SEGA wanted to celebrate all of the fun our hedgehog friend has given us over the past quarter-century, they should release an awesome collection of older Sonic games. What I hope doesn't happen is that SEGA makes another generic free-to-play endless runner for mobile phones. Given Sonic's treatment over the past few years, it could really go either way.
