Asked what medium’s next for South Park after The Fractured But Whole , South Park co-creator Trey Parker had a very direct answer. “Board games.”
Matt Stone agreed. “Board games. If Trey had his way it’d be board games.”
“If I had my way it’d be board games, because that’s my favorite thing to do,” Parker said.
The question came during a Comic-Con 2016 panel in San Diego celebrating South Park ’s 20th anniversary (the 20th season will premiere Sept. 14).
If South Park got into board games, don’t expect anything half-assed. Parker and Stone also talked about South Park ’s mixed video game legacy. While South Park: The Stick of Truth was met with rave reviews (and The Fractured But Whole is looking even better), the older games were a little more mixed.
Parker described the N64 South Park games as “dogshit.” So they decided to have more of a direct hand in the design and writing of South Park games.
“That’s when we really said ‘until we do the games ourselves, we’re not going to do the game.’ And that’s why Stick of Truth took so long to happen,” Parker said.
If we do get a South Park board game the creators will be doing their damnedest to make sure South Park ’s transition to board games is as successful as their recent video games.
