Spacestation Gaming became Rainbow Six Siege World Champions after defeating Ninjas in Pyjamas at the Six Invitational 2020. This is the first time in two years that a North American team has won a major competitive event after dominance by EU teams.
The grand finale of Six Invitational is a best of five. This means that the team that wins three matches will win the tournament. That’s where SSG had an advantage, because they won both quarter-final and semi-final in the winner’s bracket. It gave them a lead of one map. NIP had to play against TSM in the losers’ bracket in order to secure their spot in the grand finals.
The first map played was Villa, which was dominated by Ninjas in Pyjamas. They were able to win the map with a good score of 7-3. This map covered the previous lead that SSG had due to the winner’s bracket. The second map was no different, as NIP was able to win Border as well with an even better score of 7-2. This gave them one map advantage over SSG. Now NIP only needed one more match to secure the trophy.
This is where things starting to change and SSG started making a comeback. The third map was Clubhouse, and after a neck and neck fight, SSG was able to secure it with a close score of 7-5. This put the score all tied up going into the last map. Bank served as the decider. In the last map, we saw a complete opposite of our last matches. It was now SSG who won the match and the trophy with a score of 7-3.
This incredible comeback from SSG will surely be remembered by the community for a while. For some reason, this entire grand finale reminds me of Six Invitational 2018 where we saw PENTA Sports (now G2) make a comeback against Evil Geniuses after losing the first two matches.
