Developers Mossmouth and Blitworks have just announced that they will soon be launching the roguelike and action adventure platformer sequel Spelunky 2 for the PC via Steam on September 29. This launch date comes two weeks after its initial release for the PlayStation 4, which is scheduled for September 15.
Initially released in 2008, Spelunky captured the hearts of platformer players worldwide and is known as one of the first titles that utilized procedural generation technology. This means it can be called one of the first ‘roguelike’ games. Spelunky's gameplay involves players assuming the role of an unnamed adventurer only known as the spelunker. The goal is to explore the game’s procedurally generated tunnels, gathering treasures while avoiding traps and enemies. Spelunky has distinct areas and levels which correspond with harder enemies, more traps, and challenging platformer terrain, but also contains better loot, valuable treasures and more. If a player loses all their life (signified by hearts) or is insta-killed by one of the many traps, they will have to start from the beginning.
In Spelunky 2, Mossmouth and Blitworks continue to build upon the solid foundation set by its predecessor by adding new features and improvements. Now set on the moon, players can now choose from several different explorers as they set out to find both their missing family and treasure. Spelunky 2’s world is described as “even denser than the one in the original game”, now offering many more areas, characters, traps, and items.
One of the most important new features is called Base Camp, which will serve as the player’s main hub between runs. It is here where players will find characters that they have unlocked milling about and relaxing. The base camp will also serve as a place where one can practice moves without the threat of enemies. Finally, Spelunky 2 will allow for local play of up to four players and online play, either cooperatively or in the newly added competitive Arena Modes.
Spelunky 2 will be launching for the PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam on September 15 and September 29, respectively.
