StarCraft 2 is turning 10 years old. That’s right, who would have thought that StarCraft 2 would reach this milestone? While the game may not be familiar to those in the new generation, it remains close to the hearts of many old-school gamers, particularly those who love the RTS genre.
Officially released back on July 27, 2010, StarCraft 2 has since spanned three full titles along with more than a hundred major tournaments and countless custom maps and mods. Today we look at what Blizzard has in store for this exciting milestone.
First of all, StarCraft 2 is welcoming a ton of updates with Patch 5.0. There are new campaign achievements that allows players to unlock a ghostly new announcer and improvements to the Galaxy Map Editor that should make creating campaign maps easier. There are even new prestige talents for each co-op commander. Read more about the new updates here.
There is also the War Chest Team League, which is an event where nine casters captain drafted teams from a combination of invited players and those who choose to sign up. There are total of six group days and each feature six team matches. Playoffs are slated for August 16. Learn about that here.
Players get the chance to unlock the new announcer, which is none other than the protoss-playing mastermind White-Ra. This one is available for free to players who log-in to the game from July 27 through August 10.
There are also going to be New Short Stories that are set in the Koprulu Sector. Each story is going to focus on each race and it’s going to start with “One People, One Purpose” by Alex Acks.
Be excited as well to experience the Best Games of Competitive StarCraft 2 esports. The development team of StarCraft 2 is set to recount many of the high-flying moments, personal favorites, and the unforgettable upsets of 10 years of StarCraft 2 esports.
Talking about mods, there have indeed been a lot of contributions from the community over the past decade. Examples include:
- Squadron Tower Defense
- This tower defense mod is a good example of what makes this genre truly compelling.
- Create structures, manage resources, and have fun with friends.
- Odyssey
- Created by Luis Rocha, this custom campaign takes you to the Kardyan Quadrant where players lead a band of Terran Marines known as Hell’s Rejects.
- Player-Created Ladder Maps
- Some of the most iconic maps in the game were in fact created by the community.
- These include Daybreak, Kingdom LE, and Overgrowth.
