New information on the Steep beta is giving us some idea of the interest Ubisoft Annecy’s new extreme sport game is attracting. As usual, Ubisoft could’ve given us more information than they elected to. But maybe we should just be happy a game like Steep, a relatively small project for the publisher that hasn’t received much promotion, managed to attract an audience at all.
Like many of you, we spent several hours exploring Steep during the game’s pre-Thanksgiving open beta. But it was hard to determine just how many people were enjoying the extreme winter sports game. None of the mountains seemed especially busy, though we did occasionally run into other players, leading us to wonder if Steep might see early struggles after the game hits PC and consoles this Friday. But new stats from the beta suggest Steep might have a sizable audience after all.
Here’s the new infographic from Ubisoft :
Of course, the one statistic that Steep players might actually care about -- the number of other players engaging with Ubisoft Annecy’s open-world extreme sports game -- remains a mystery. We may know what riding style the Steep community preferred, and even its chosen sport, but Ubisoft seems to have intentionally stopped short of providing any information that might lets us determine total interest. We know roughly how many rides were taken during the three-day beta, but not the average duration. We know the total distance travelled and even the number of gold medals earned during the Steep test. But don’t know the average per player for either. And it's not like it's an entirely trivial piece of information. Those who own more than one gaming system would undoubtedly prefer to play Steep on the platform where it has the largest audience. Unfortunately, it looks like launch day Steam stats might be the closest we're going to get to those numbers.
