There’s a certain synergy that connects Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios that can’t be denied. Many of the happenings in the Marvel Studios movies affect what happens to the characters in the comics and vice versa.
So when it was revealed that T’Challa AKA the Black Panther will not only appear in his own movie but play a big role in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War film , it was only a matter of time that Marvel Comics will deliver on a solo series to showcase to new and older readers.
Like Marvel Comics editor, Tom Brevoort said at San Diego Comic-Con regarding Black Panther’s status post-Secret Wars, “Well we haven’t announced everything we are doing after Secret Wars. Won’t confirm or deny but since he’s having a movie it’s a good chance we are going to do something big with the character. When we are ready to roll them out we will. More stuff to come.”
And Marvel Comics finally pulled back the curtain on its plan for T’Challa post-Secret Wars with the announcement of a new Black Panther series that will be penned by Ta-Nehisi Coates and artist Brian Stelfreeze.
For those not familiar with Coates’ work, the writer is best known for his contributions to The Atlantic and has been nominated for the National Book Award’s nonfiction prize. His book, “Between the World and Me” was Coates’ way to tell his son how it is to be black in America and has been critically lauded.
Coates and Stelfreeze will bring Wakanda to the brink of civil unrest as T’Challa must deal with the rise of a superhuman terrorist group called the People. “A Nation Under Our Feet,” the year-long storyline is inspired by the 2003 book of the same title by Steven Hahn and will bring Black Panther to a new place in Marvel Comics.
“It’s going to be a story that repositions the Black Panther in the minds of readers,” Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief, Axel Alonso told the New York Times . “It really moves him forward.”
And if you’re wondering, yes Black Panther will come with a hip-hop variant like plenty of other number one issues post-Secret Wars.
Check it out based on Jay-Z’s Black Album.
There is no release date for the new Black Panther series, but we will update when it the date is confirmed.
