Fans who pre-order Dark Souls 3 from the official Xbox store will receive a free copy of the first game in the series, Microsoft and Bandai Namco confirmed this week. But anyone excited by the prospect of playing the original Dark Souls on their Xbox One will have to wait an indefinite period of time for that dream to become a reality.
Word of the giveaway first broke on reddit, after a member of the /r/xboxone sub-reddit spotted the offer on the Australian Xbox store. While few would have been surprised to learn the offer was regional, and wouldn’t apply to pre-orders in other Europe or North America, it seems that isn’t the case. A new VideoGamer report confirms the offer will extend to anyone who pre-orders a copy of Dark Souls 3 from the Xbox store, regardless of region. The outlet also says Bandai Namco will begin distributing Dark Souls keys in 7-10 days.
Unfortunately, those who’ve already offloaded their Xbox 360 will have to wait some number of weeks (maybe longer) before they’ll get a chance to play their copy of the game. Bandai Namco says the Dark Souls download code can be redeemed as soon it as its received, immediately adding the game to the user’s library; however, the publisher says Dark Souls won’t join the Xbox One backwards compatibility list until a later (yet-to-be revealed) date.
Dark Souls 3 is being developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game is scheduled to hit North American retailers on April 12.
