It’s long been rumored that Darth Vader would appear somewhere in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, despite initial reports that the focus on Rebellion and Imperial ground troops would keep Jedi and Sith out of the picture. But new leaks from the set of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story suggest that Darth Vader will be much more than just a cameo or background character. According to Making Star Wars, not only is Disney going to great lengths to perfectly recreate the Darth Vader suit, but have also secured James Earl Jones to return as the voice of Vader.

While Darth Vader is unlikely to be played by Dave Prowse (who is 80), it’s heartening to hear that the iconic James Earl Jonesvoice will return (though Jones’ 84-year-old voice probably won’t find quite the same timbre as it did in 1977).

If Making Star Wars’ sources are accurate, then Darth Vader will be a minor character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but featured prominently in a handful of scenes.

If we’re lucky Rogue One director Gareth Edwards and writer Chris Weitz have taken a close look at Vader’s expanded characterization in Marvel Comics’ excellent Star Wars: Darth Vader series, particularly the Star Wars: Vader Down event, which portrays battlefield Vader as something akin to a roving nuclear bomb. His introduction in a Rogue One opening battle could turn the tide against the nascent Rebellion and give our heroes a shocking glimpse at exactly what powers stand arrayed against them.
