The StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void release date is finally approaching, after more than two years of waiting. And, ever since the game was revealed at BlizzCon 2014, Blizzard has been far more open about their intentions for the final game in the StarCraft II series. And we’ll soon learn even more, about multiplayer anyway, when the Legacy of the Void beta opens in another month or so. But when will the game actually come out?

Legacy Of The Void Trailer: Blizzard Pulls A Nice Scam By Making The Last StarCraft 2 Expansion A Standalone

'Heart Of The Swarm' Campaign Review: Kerrigan Sucks; Blizzard Ruins 'StarCraft II' [REPORT]

Blizzard’s big reveal of Legacy of the Void at BlizzCon covered both the game’s multiplayer side and its campaign. The former came as a particular surprise, since Blizzard had previously suggested that there would be minimal, if any, changes to the multiplayer side. But that was a long time ago, and that plan has changed completely. Now, the game is a standalone expansion, with an entirely new campaign, several new modes, and a revamped multiplayer with several new units.

Honestly, I only really care about the single player side, the Legacy of the Void campaign. That probably puts me in the minority, but hey, there it is. The campaign itself sounds pretty exciting: The focus has shifted from Zeratul to Artanis, who is trying to unite the disparate Protoss tribes and forge them into one whole. And their numbers have dwindled, many or most residing aboard his ancient Arkship, the Spear of Adun. The Protoss in the campaign will bring their full power to bear, though, unleashing their full technology in the fight against clichéd eternal darkness.

The multiplayer side keeps changing dramatically, with new units being added and then killed or heavily tweaked all the time. I’ll simply direct you to Blizzard’s latest update for the details. The key thing, though, is that the Legacy of the Void beta will début in late March or early April, according to multiple reports.

That timeframe gives us a huge hint to the eventual Legacy of the Void release date. The Heart of the Swarm beta started in September 2012, and the game came out in March 2013. That’s seven months from the start of the beta until final release. If we see a similar timeframe this time, and if the beta goes well, we should see Legacy of the Void in November or so—which makes sense anyway. That’s the holiday season, and it’s the perfect time for a major, standalone StarCraft II release.

And I for one can’t wait. Even though the last campaign was terribly written, even though this one will be too, I need to make it to the end of Legacy of the Void. And soon we’ll be able to.
