Super Mario Run released on Dec. 15 to a surge of downloads as the first Nintendo mobile game made its way to iOS devices. However, the one-time payment of $9.99 has not been met with positive reviews from users and that may not change if those who purchased the game don’t receive more for their dollars.
A Wall Street Journal report on the impact Super Mario Run has had on Nintendo and how it compared to other mobile offerings like Pokémon Go documents the money made so far and how much Nintendo stands to make in the future, but this tidbit from the report may make players a bit peeved:
“The Mario game, on the other hand, gives players only one chance to pay—the $9.99 charge to advance to the game’s higher levels. A Nintendo spokesman said the company didn’t plan to release additional content, either free or paid.”
While this isn’t a definitive “no” to any huge update, it’s a disclaimer for players who purchased the game to not expect any significant updates to Super Mario Run , including levels or characters, in the near future.
We have reached out to Nintendo for clarification on the statement and we will update if we receive one.
There is, however, a holiday update for Super Mario Run that lets players purchase holiday-themed goodies from the shop to decorate their own Mushroom Kingdoms in Kingdom Builder.
Some of these new items include a blue Christmas tree and a Mario snow globe to add to their Kingdoms.
Do you believe Nintendo will update Super Mario Run with any significant additions or do you think timely minor updates like the holiday items are what’s in Super Mario Run’s future? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below.
