Veep season 5 premieres on HBO on April 24 th at 10:30 pm—following the premiere of Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley. The show has been getting better and better the last few years, but this season is going to bring big changes to the show. First, the last season ended on a major cliffhanger that will have to be addressed early on. Second, the show has a new showrunner following the departure of the series’ creator, Armando Ianucci. But it’s okay—the new guy has got some serious cred too.
Veep Season 5 Premiere Date: More Out There Than The Real Election
When Veep comes back on April 24 th , it will be under the new guidance of David Mandel. Ianucci was spending too much time in the United States and wanted to return home to his family in London, which is a pretty good reason for leaving a show he created, so don’t worry too much about that. And Mandel is likely to bring a similarly sharp and acerbic touch to Veep. After all, he’s a veteran of both Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, a show about rich married couples who have dinner parties together. That means he’s no stranger to producing this kind of comedy—nor to working with Julia Louis-Dreyfus in particular.
So don’t expect a major disruption in Veep season 5. Sure, the tone, pacing and delivery of jokes probably will change in noticeable ways (not bad ways—just noticeable!). But it will still definitively be the same show. The trailer alone makes that pretty clear.
Veep season 5 has a lot of ground to cover. To its credit, the show is staking out some ground that’s truly ridiculous and even more unlikely than the shenanigans taking place in the real primary— something House of Cards couldn’t quite pull off. A tied election! A U.S. presidential contest thrown into the House of Representatives, with the incompetent protagonist’s job and the whole premise of the show at stake! It’s good stuff. And even though Selena Meyer will surely pull it off eventually, somehow, it’ll be great to see how it all develops. Veep season 5 premieres on April 24.
