Blizzard is currently hiring for an unannounced project, according to listings on Blizzard’s website. Positions for artists, engineers and a production director have popped up over the last couple of months. Former Hearthstone head designer, Eric Dodds, is currently working on an unannounced project according to current Hearthstone head honcho, Ben Brode. For us Blizzard fanboys who have been salivating over Overwatch, the company’s last game, the possibilities are endless.
Since my favorite hobby is theory crafting about what Blizzard is working on next, I decided to go through a few options as to what the game might be. Remember, this is all in good fun, I don’t claim to know what’s going on behind the scenes at the House that Azeroth built.
Warcraft IV- After Half-Life 3 , Warcraft IV might be the most sought after sequel of all time. It’s been 15 years since Warcraft III was first released, leaving fans who want to play a modern-looking Blizzard RTS with Starcraft II . In summer of 2015, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime told Game Informer that Warcraft IV could be coming in the future, though it would be a long ways away. He also said that he believes in the mobile game market and that there’s still “untapped potential there.”
Imagine a world with “ Warcraft IV: Mobile Edition ” where you have to buy units with in-game currency or wait for a timer to count down before building orc barracks. In a truly cynical world, where absolutely nothing is sacred, Blizzard could turn the game that made them famous into a freemium shell of its predecessors. Blizzard isn’t above the free-to-play mode, Heroes Of The Storm and Hearthstone don’t cost a thing up front, but require a massive time commitment to be any good without dropping a dollar.
If they give Warcraft IV a level editor, I’ll be happy with whatever Blizzard manages to create.
Platformer Of My Dreams- Blizzard has a game for nearly every genre: Starcraft II (real time strategy), Hearthstone (card game), World Of Warcraft ( MMO), Diablo III (dungeon crawler) and Heroes Of The Storm (MOBA.) The only type of game that’s missing for me is an open-world RPG, a platformer where you get to explore a physics enhanced world. WoW might be free to explore, but the engine is so outdated and ugly that there would be no way to cram a fun platformer inside of it.
What I’m hoping for is an RPG platformer made by Blizzard. Any Blizzard IP’s universe would be a perfect fit, from Lucio in Overwatch needing to collect the agents of his team to WoW , where Illidan and his demon hunters could travel the lands, slaughtering all who come across his path. When Blizzard makes a game, they make perfection: releasing an outdated, poorly made or boring game just isn’t something they do. Nintendo released the best open-world RPG, Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild , and Blizzard is the only company that I think can do better.
Doomfist Mix And Match- Doomfist, Overwatch’s most dangerous criminal that nobody has ever seen, shouldn’t show up as a playable hero. There’s no way for the legendary Doomfist to appear in Overwatch without disappointing fans. We have no idea who he is, but he’s always the most googled character whenever a new leak appears. He should have his own game, where he’s voiced by Terry Crews and can make smashing puns accordingly.
If Blizzard is ever going to release a mindless, mobile clicking game, they can at least give us Doomfist to ease the butthurt.
