Blizzard has released a new update for Overwatch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One to celebrate the inaugural season of the Overwatch League. It adds a huge number of skins to the game: 312, actually, since each of the game’s 26 characters receives 12 new skins. This lets players pick and choose which Overwatch League team to represent, since each of the new skins is themed around one of the dozen teams who participate in Overwatch League.
Unlike other Overwatch events such as the anniversary and Halloween events, you don’t grind loot boxes in order to nab these skins. Instead, they are sold using a brand-new currency called League Tokens. You’ll receive 100 Tokens for free by logging in before Feb. 13. Each skin is sold individually for 100 Tokens, so the free gift will let you pick one skin. And that’s how they get you…
In order to buy League Tokens, you’ll have to pony up a significant amount of dosh: 100 Tokens is $5 ($5 for a single cosmetic skin!). Higher-priced bundles, which range up to $100 for 2,600 Tokens, bring down the dollar-to-Token ratio. Here’s what the prices are:
100 Tokens = USD $4.99*
200 Tokens = USD $9.99
400 Tokens = USD $19.99
900 Tokens = USD $39.99
2600 Tokens = USD $99.99
That being said, a complete set of Overwatch League skins will cost you $1200 USD. Gadzoinks! But you can check out all of the skins over at GameSpot here . Don’t expect too much: while there’s a great number of skins, they’re mostly just color-swapped palettes, with none of the flair and originality of some of Overwatch’s great Legendaries.
The update also adds a few gameplay tweaks and addresses a wide variety of bugs. For example, this patch causes Zenyatta’s Orbs of Discord and Harmony to show the player the target’s health bar, a change I have personally longed for. Ana’s controls have a new Friendly Aim Assist Strength setting to help you reach your teammates and only your teammates. Console players also gain new options: all communication wheel selections can be bound to a button while crouching can now be a press-and-hold command. Finally, the main menu is now home to a new Overwatch League area that lets you stream the matches.
In terms of bug fixes, a slew of problems with Doomfist’s Rocket Punch are addressed, items should now display properly upon opening a loot box, and more problems have been fixed. You can check out the full patch notes from Blizzard here.
The Overwatch League airs tomorrow at 7.p.m. EST on Twitch, MLG.com, the MLG app on iOS and Android, and on OverwatchLeague.com. Opening Day begins with San Francisco Shock vs. Los Angeles Valiant, followed by Shanghai Dragons vs. Los Angeles Gladiators. The last match of opening day will be Dallas Fuel vs Seoul Dynasty. The full Overwatch League regular-season schedule is available here.
