Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality? You will when HBO’s Westworld premieres Sunday, Oct. 2 at 9 p.m.
The one-hour drama series Westworld is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, it explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.
Westworld explores a society where inhabitants can’t tell who’s real, and who’s not. “Well if you can’t tell, does it matter?” the trailer aks.
The 10-episode series stars Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Robert Ford, “the brilliant, taciturn and complicated” founder of Westworld with an “uncompromising creative vision” for the theme park.” Ed Harris plays The Man In Black. Deadline describes his character as a “distillation of pure villainy into one man.” Evan Rachel Wood plays Dolores Abernathy, “a provincial, beautiful and kind rancher’s daughter who discovers that her entire idyllic existence is an elaborately constructed lie.”
Inspired by the late Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name, Wood elaborated on Westworld ’s plot at the Television Critics Association press tour this weekend. She said there are only subtle ways to identify differences between hosts and humans. "One slight little movement or freeze that throws you off completely" can reveal a host, Wood explained.
Executive Producer Lisa Joy talked about just how much artificial intelligence should be integrated into human life. "It's questioning: 'Where does life begin?'"she said according to USA Today. "It's a constant examination of that line. Where does consciousness begin and end?"
