Sad news for DC fans today as the anticipated "Wonder Woman" game that was set to feature a solo story for the Amazonian warrior princess has already been canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery. This happened because of a recent restructuring of the company, which also led to three game development studios being axed.
One of the studios that has been shut down is Monolith Productions, the team that was tasked to develop the "Wonder Woman" game.
'Wonder Woman' Game Is Now Canceled by Warner Bros.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier shared a new report via Bluesky that Warner Bros. has released a statement about recent changes to the company. This new shift significantly affected an ongoing project that will feature Diana of Themiscyra in her solo adventure.
Over the past years, there have been no updates from Warner Bros. Games and Monolith Productions about the development of this game as well.
The "Wonder Woman" game was originally teased almost four years ago as part of Warner Bros. and DC's expansion of its video games following its success with "Batman." It was supposedly a massive project that would feature an open-world action-adventure experience featuring the demigoddess.
It also received a massive following as the game was tasked to be under Monolith, the developer behind "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor," which was one of WB Games' most famous releases in recent years.
However, the dream is already over for Monolith and fans who have looked forward to the Amazonian princess' solo adventure.
Warner Bros. Restructuring: 3 Game Studios Shut Down
Warner Bros.'s massive restructuring campaign also affected two other gaming studios, Player First Games and Warner Bros. San Diego. Hundreds of employees under these three studios were left without a job because of this restructuring, and it remains unknown if they will be other subsidiaries of the company can take them in.
In Warner Bros.'s statement, the company said that they are looking to focus their game developments on more successful franchises in its IP, including "Harry Potter," DC, "Game of Thrones," and "Mortal Kombat."
Moreover, the company also acknowledged its recent woes in the gaming industry as recent releases flopped in the market, particularly "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" and the free-to-play platform game "MultiVersus."
The Future of Warner Bros. in Gaming
It has only been two months since Warner Bros. implemented a massive restructuring to its game development subsidiaries, particularly as WB Montreal laid off a total of 99 employees ahead of the holidays. This layoff mostly affected subcontractors of the company under the Keywords QA team.
That being said, another game under WB Games is also performing poorly in the market after a rather strong release, with NetherRealm's "Mortal Kombat 1" reportedly skipping a possible DLC release.
Following an underwhelming release of the "Khaos Reigns" expansion, the future is unclear for further additional content for "MK1."
