‘Arrow’ Season 5 Spoilers: The New Black Canary Is Someone From The Comics After All

Arrow, Wild Dog and Mr. Terrific took a trip over to Hub City to recruit a new Black Canary in Arrow Season 5 episode 11, “Second Chances.” Her name is Tina Boland, well so they thought. Turns out, she’s someone way more familiar to comic book fans.

At the very end of the episode, Tina Boland shows up in Oliver’s office and reveals her true name is Dinah Drake. Yes, that’s Dinah Drake, the first Black Canary’s name. All her records are under the name Tina Boland because she was undercover as a Central City Police Detective for a number of years. During her time undercover, her true identity as a cop was revealed and she was captured. After weeks of torture, the criminals also captured her boyfriend, Vince, and shot him point blank at the same moment the particle accelerator exploded. Screaming as the explosion passed by her, she gained the ability to sonic scream.

In the comics, Dinah Drake is the Black Canary of the Golden Age. She's the mother of Dinah Laurel Lance, today’s Black Canary. This Arrow reveal was refreshing, considering until earlier today (courtesy of a Reddit thread), we thought Tina Boland would just be a random vigilante hoping to take on the Black Canary’s mantle. And while many fans are riding the #NoLaurelNoBlackCanary train, they can’t argue Arrow Season 5 is absolutely killing it right now. Having Earth-2 Laurel Lance back for the midseason premiere was weird and it’s time to give Juliana Harkavy a shot.
