'Attack on Titan' Season 2 Release Date: Sorry, It’s Going To Be A While. Like, 2015.

So, "Attack on Titan" is basically the hottest thing in anime in around ten years, except maybe for the "Evangelion" movies. We're getting pretty close to the "Attack on Titan" Blu-Ray, with the English dub, and we've had the original version of the anime on Netflix for a couple whiles. That's all well and good, but what about "Attack on Titan" season 2? When is that going to come out? Sorry to say, but it's going to be a while.

First off, "Attack on Titan" season 2 is definitely coming... sooner or later, but with the emphasis mostly on later. That's because the creators of the anime, Wit Studios, aren't even working on a sequel yet. At least not in the traditional sense. I know that seems hard to believe: "Attack on Titan" was their first TV show and their first hit; it's surprising they have the luxury to not follow it up immediately. But it's the truth: they're not working on a direct sequel in 2014. They definitely intend to eventually, however, so 2015 is pretty likely.

So, what is Wit Studios working on instead of "Attack on Titan" season 2? According to Rocketnews24, quoting studio head Joji Wada, Wit's new project is still intimately "Attack on Titan" related:

Eventually, we definitely want to do a sequel. This year, though, we've got our hands full producing an anime that will be bundled in a limited edition of the "Attack on Titan" manga, which tells a different sort of story than what we did in the TV series.

Now, I don't know about you, but I don't know nearly enough about the manga scene to know exactly what that means, or how a manga can come with a bundled anime. I just know it means that, although the actual "Attack on Titan" season 2 release date is mega far away, we will get some new "Attack on Titan" content this year in the form of that direct manga tie-in. I'm guessing it must tell a smaller story somehow, or be a side story, rather than a straight adaptation of the manga. Because that would just be season 2 territory.

I'm pretty bummed that we won't get to see "Attack on Titan" season 2 in 2014, but hey, at least we know it will be coming down the pike eventually. And it sounds like they'll have a bigger budget from the outset, so they can maintain the same consistently high level of special effects as the best parts of the first season. Let's hope it will be worth the wait.

The "Attack on Titan" season 1 Blu-Ray is out on June 3, 2014.
