Critics were not fond of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but after nearly $1 billion ($872.7 million) at the box office, it could be considered a success. Many fans enjoyed it and praised Ben Affleck’s performance as Batman (a pleasant surprise, considering his awful Daredevil in a past life). After Dawn of Justice, it was announced that the next Batman movie would be directed and written by Affleck, with co-writing credit going to Geoff Johns. Johns’ resume includes executive producer on Dawn of Justice, co-producer for Green Lantern and writing for shows like Smallville and Blade.
Early rumors persisted that this Batman solo movie could take place entirely in Arkham Asylum, with the Caped Crusader chasing multiple villains around the psychiatric hospital. However, according to the Twitter account of Umberto Gonzalez of The Wrap, that may not entirely be the plan.
The Batman Day scoop from Gonzalez throws a wrench into what many people thought. The idea of setting an entire film in Arkham is a concept that was taken from the 2009 video game, Batman: Arkham Asylum. In the game, Batman captures The Joker and escorts him to Arkham Asylum but The Joker and Harley Quinn take over the facility and lock Batman inside. The game features Batman facing off against villains such as Scarecrow, Killer Croc and Poison Ivy. The game was a big success, lauded by critics and fans alike.
Details around the Batman solo movie remain limited, but we do know Joe Manganiello is set to take on the role of Deathstroke, the main villain of the movie. Besides that, there’s nothing set in stone since we are very early in the movie’s development. Since most films, superhero or not, never takes place in one setting for the duration of the movie, the thought of Batman running through Arkham Asylum and fighting off villains around every corner in an environment not conducive to Batman is intriguing.
The Ben Affleck directed Batman movie is set for release sometime in 2018. While you wait for that film, Batman will appear in the new Justice League film , which arrives Nov, 17, 2017.
