Battlefield 5 is very likely getting revealed next week. EA and DICE have announced a Battlefield event taking place at 4 p.m. EST on May 6 that will “give the first look at the future of Battlefield.”
So what is this new Battlefield game going to be, and when will we get to play it? Judging by earlier leaks, it seems Battlefield 5 may be coming out on Oct. 26. According to EA, we “should assume” a new Battlefield game will be coming in EA’s fiscal third quarter, which is from October to December. Oct. 26 falls perfectly in that window, so the release date does make sense. If we don’t see that exact release date, expect the game to come out somewhere around then.
As for what Battlefield 5 will be like, there’s one rumor that we’ll be going back in time to World War I. A Swiss retailer’s leaked description of the game was “Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter im 1. Weltkrieg” For those that don’t feel like translating that, it means “Multiplayer Tactical Shooter in World War 1.” The listing has since been edited to drop the “World War 1” part.
Based on modern trends in the gaming industry, a historical shooter is not likely. Most big FPS games have either been set in the present, near future, or far future. This doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of DICE moving back towards historical shooters, but it’s likely we’ll see Battlefield 5 looking more like Battlefield 4 than anything else.
