Warner Bros. and DC Comics are banking on 2016 to be the year they can finally compete with the juggernaut that is Marvel Studios and its continued universe. And while Marvel Studios will be adding Civil War and Doctor Strange to its extensive library, it can be argued that the upcoming slate of DC Comics movies are the most anticipated of 2016.

Of course, we are talking about the upcoming Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.

Both films are ready to unleash the world of DC Comics and its most popular characters to the general public in a universe that is similar yet different from Marvel’s. The first film will introduce DC Comics’ Trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman to this shared universe and will hopefully jump start some franchises.

But the lynchpin to both movies is Ben Affleck and his Batman. It’s been confirmed that Ben Affleck will appear in Suicide Squad this August in a minor role/cameo but in an interview with USA Today, director David Ayer talked about his film and a little about what Batman will be doing.

"We made him fight," Ayer told USA Today. "He's awesome [as Batman] ... You really sense that but for the grace of God he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.”

Ok, so Batman will be fighting….someone in Suicide Squad. Probably some Joker goons or whatnot but it’s interesting to know that Batman will be the bridge between BvS and Suicide Squad for the rest of the DC Comics movie universe.

Affleck also spoke with USA Today to talk about his role in Suicide Squad and how it feels to be part of something bigger.

“It felt like I have such a cool cousin. This thing that is so awesome is somehow related to me, and that was really exciting because it started to feel like a constellation of things, and I’ve never had that feeling.”

If you weren’t hyped for both DC Comics films, Affleck is giving his seal of approval but only time will tell. Let us know your thoughts about Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad in the comments and whether they will launch a new successful shared universe.

Batman vs Superman is set to release March 25 and Suicide Squad is set to release Aug. 5.
