Black Lighting is CW’s next DC Comics show and the network just released the very first pictures from the premiere episode, “Dark Matter Of My Brain.” Footage from San Diego Comic-Con introduced us to Jefferson Pierce’s daughters, Jennifer and Anissa, as well as his former wife Lynn. We also saw a glimpse of The 100 gang, however, the latest photos offer the first look at two prominent characters from the comics: Tobias Whale and Gambi.
Peter Gambi (played by James Remar in the series) appears right off the bat in Black Lightning #1 as Jefferson Pierce’s confidant. He is the only good guy in a family of villains: a tailor in Metropolis' Suicide Slum. When he was young and part of the mob, he actually killed Pierce's father, but has since reformed and designed Black Lightning’s costume and force field belt. Peter eventually sacrifices his life for Pierce, who forgave him for his past crimes. It’s awesome Gambi is in the series, because you can’t really start Black Lightning’s story without him. From what we know about the series, Gambi’s origins will be similar to the comics. He’s a father figure and mentor to Pierce, as well as his personal tailor.
Tobias Whale (played by Marvin “Krondon” Jones III in the series) has been part of Black Lightning’s story from the beginning. The murder of one of his students by Whale’s 100 Gang prompted Pierce’s vigilantism. His character will be a little different in the series, as the breakdown describes him as a corrupt politician eventually taken down by Alvin Pierce, Black Lightning’s father. He killed Alvin in revenge, which drove him underground to build The 100 gang.
Another photo also poses some interesting questions, hinting Jennifer Pierce could be involved with The 100 gang somehow. The two men in these photos also appear in the San Diego Comic Con trailer, busting into the high school holding students at gunpoint. Dressed in the black hoodie is Will, played by recording artist Dabier. In the red is William Cartlet as Lala. What are they doing with Black Lightning’s youngest daughter, Jennifer? Hopefully if she’s in danger, she can activate her electromagnetic powers just like her father. Her involvement may actually be the reason Jefferson Piece cancels his retirement from vigilantism.
In addition to these plot hints, we also get the best look yet at Black Lightning’s suit. We also see Anissa Pierce teaching a science class. According to previous descriptions, we know she works a part-time job at her father’s high school while attending medical school.
Characters still yet to be seen are Damon Gupton as Inspector Henderson, Chantal Thuy as Grace Choi and Jill Scott as Lady Eve. Follow this link to learn more about the cast. Black Lightning was created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden. And make sure to check out the new Black Lightning comic books series from Isabella, Cold Dead Hands.
