Ahhh, the Super Bowl. This most recent one wasn’t a good one, in terms of entertainment value - but I’ll leave that to the sports writers. I’m here to talk about the movie commercials of course! Super Bowl 50 gifted us several new previews for anticipated features, such as X-Men: Apocalypse and Independence Day: Resurgence. How about that other awesome franchise, though? That’s right, I’m talking about Bourne 5: The Return of Matt Damon (working title).
After taking a break from the last installment, The Bourne Legacy, actor Matt Damon will once again play Jason Bourne and join The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum helmer, Paul Greengrass. The second and third features in the Bourne franchise defied Hollywood logic by churning out a commercially successful box office haul while also garnering rave critical reviews. Without further ado, take a look at the first teaser for the duo’s newest collaboration, Jason Bourne:
If the renewed partnership between Damon and Greengrass isn’t exciting enough, Bourne 5 will also see the return of Julia Stiles, who will reprise her role of ex-CIA agent, Nicky Parsons. This time, however, Stiles won’t play the opposite lead to Damon, but rather a supporting role as Ex-Machina star Alicia Vikander will slot into the starring female character instead. The series will also introduce Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones as a new high-ranking CIA officer.
Plot details are also under wraps, but Damon did sit down with BuzzFeed and vaguely speak about the direction that audiences can expect. “Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” Damon said. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
We’ll have to wait and see what exactly goes down. Fans will get a chance to find out for themselves with Jason Bourne set to hit theaters on July 29.
