Over the past years, many have considered "Overwatch 2" as a "mid" game as it was not able to live up to the popularity of the original game, but it has survived in the industry since then. However, there are new rumors that Blizzard Entertainment is planning a massive change for the free-to-play online action shooter game, and this includes changing the game's name.
Now, fans are fearing that this may happen soon, with "Overwatch 2" set to undergo a new revamp to its experiences and offers courtesy of Blizzard as part of changes to get rid of its "sequel status."
Fans Fear 'Overwatch 2's' Rumored Name Change
A new report from Eurogamer has expanded on a rumor which claims that Blizzard is currently considering a massive revamp of its current online arena-based shooter game "Overwatch 2." Since its release in late 2022, Blizzard has faced rocky operations for the game, and it was not able to convince long-time fans and gamers of the franchise to become fans of the sequel.
Nevertheless, the game continues its operations and has been able to see many gamers enjoy what it has to offer, but the company is reportedly contemplating on giving it another major revamp less than two years since it was released. The rumor claims that Blizzard is considering removing the "2" from "Overwatch 2's" title.
Fans are now fearing this upcoming change for the latest game, and they are also questioning what is the essence of releasing "Overwatch 2" if it would only be brought back to its original state. It is known that Blizzard introduced an unpopular setup in the game when it released "Overwatch 2" as it focused on a 5v5 match format instead of the famed 6v6 action enjoyed on the original.
Blizzard to Remove 'Overwatch 2' Sequel Status?
Other sources are now chiming into the "Overwatch" revamp, claiming that the gaming community would have to say "goodbye" to "Overwatch 2" soon.
Apart from the name change, it has also been rumored that the original "Overwatch" skins will now be called the "Classic" skin collection, while the cosmetics that appear in the sequel game will now be referred to as "Valorous" skins.
This "return to roots" by Blizzard will reportedly transform the experience yet again for "Overwatch 2," which already faced massive backlash during its release. Previously, it proved that fans missed the original experiences of the predecessor game when the company released events and game modes that focused on "Classic" experiences from the previous title.
For now, these details are still rumors, with no official word yet from Blizzard Entertainment and its team about the future changes in the online shooter. That being said, rumors claim that the name change that will rid the current game of its sequel status would drop by Season 16's release, which is set for late April.
