Activision’s annual Call of Duty celebration will return in 2016, according to a new ad for the event, and the publisher is even bringing a special virtual reality tie-in to promote the next game in the series, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare , ahead of its November debut. Sadly, it sounds like the vast majority of the CoD community won’t get a chance to experience the VR content.
Call of Duty XP 2016 will return to the Los Angeles area on Sept. 2, Activision confirmed on Wednesday, giving West Coast fans another three days to celebrate their favorite first-person shooter. This year’s CoD celebration will be hosted at The Forum, former home of the Clippers, Kings and Lakers, and will include the 2016 Call Of Duty World League Championship. Activision is also promising to release the world’s first Infinite Warfare multiplayer footage at some point during Call of Duty XP 2016, along with the first footage of the next Black Ops 3 expansion.
Turns out, those in attendance will also get a chance to play a Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare VR tech demo built exclusively for Call of Duty XP 2016. According to Eurogamer, Activision doesn’t currently plan to show or release the VR content -- which lets players a pilot the Jackal fighter jet from Infinite Warfare -- anywhere other than the annual fan event. So the only opportunity anyone may have to try the Infinite Warfare VR experience could be Sept. 2-4. Granted, the publisher doesn’t rule out the possibility of releasing that content at some point. But it feels like a brave new world when Activision is developing content without a marketing strategy incubating alongside it.
