Call of Duty: Modern Warfare revealed that in its first three days of release, it had earned at least $600 million worldwide. This title has sold more units in the first three days than any other game in the series and has managed to become the top-selling new premium game release of the year.
That's not all, as Modern Warfare has also set a new record as the #1 top-selling digital opening in the history of Activision. In fact, its earning in the first three days of release is more than double the box office opening of the film Joker.
Still on the issue of records, Modern Warfare also had the highest digital pre-orders on the PlayStation Network as well as the having the highest three-day digital sales ever on PlayStation 4. Still on the issue of records, Modern Warfare also became the #1 top-selling Call of Duty PC launch ever with opening weekend PC sales on Blizzard's Battle.net significantly higher compared to last year.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a press statement that Call of Duty becoming the top selling new premium game of 2019 shows "the enduring nature of the franchise across console, PC, mobile, and esports.”
Activision President Rob Kostich added in the statement that on the first three days, the game "has more total players and total hours played than any Call of Duty opening release in the last six years. More importantly, our players are having a great time playing.” Kostich also congratulated Infinity Ward as well as all the teams involved in the game and the launch. He also went on to say that they "want to thank the community for [their] incredible support. The launch of Modern Warfare is only the start. There’s much more to come."
First-person shooter video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was released on October 25 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game is the first in the franchise to offer cross-platform multiplayer. It also removes the usual season pass along with loot boxes. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare received generally favorable reviews, with critis praising the gameplay and story with criticism focused on how the game handles its subject matter.
