Fans have been demanding a new Prince of Persia game for quite a while now. The last PoP game, The Forgotten Sands, was released back in 2010 and ever since the franchise has stayed dormant. However, we were this close from getting a proper sequel. It turns out that Ubisoft was actually developing a new Prince of Persia game at one point, but it was canceled.
Developers pitched their game to Ubisoft, but the publishing giant never picked it up. The unannounced game was titled Prince of Persia Redemption and would have acted as a soft reboot for the franchise. The gameplay of the canceled game was released on YouTube back in 2012, but it managed to fly under everyone's radar until now. Below is the three-minute-long gameplay footage of the game.
Former Ubisoft Developer Jonathan Cooper confirmed on Twitter that the footage is real. “Wow - haven't seen this in ages. Amazing work from animation director Khai Nguyen (For Honor) and team. This target game footage (pre-rendered game pitch) inspired our own pitch for Assassin's Creed 3 as they did such a great job making it look like real gameplay.” the tweet reads.
As mentioned above, the game wasn’t picked up, however several gameplay elements of Redemption later inspired Assassin's Creed 3. Cooper also mentioned that the game was canceled as the Prince of Persia license is still held by the original creator, Jordan Mechner. Ubisoft's profit margin would be smaller due to this, so they decided to ditch the game.
The chance of getting a new Prince of Persia game looks grim unless Ubisoft decides to backtrack its decision, as demand for a new PoP game is higher than ever. Until then, we will have to make do with the PoP crossover event with For Honor.
