Captain America and Iron Man engaged in civil war against each other, but the pair of Avengers teamed up to destroy the box office. According to studio estimates from comScore (h/t USA Today), Captain America: Civil War made a whopping $181.8 million dollars, making it the fifth-biggest movie opening of all-time.
If that feat doesn’t seem astounding enough, consider the only films to surpass Captain America: Civil War on opening weekend: Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million), The Avengers ($207.4 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million). It’s no coincidence that three of the top five films are Marvel movies.
Along with additional earnings from its international release last week, Captain America: Civil War has now made $678.4 million globally. It’s only going to improve from here as Civil War has universally impressed critics with a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Add in the MCU introductions of Black Panther and Spider-Man and Captain America: Civil War should continue to dominate at the box office.
Here’s a synopsis of Captain America: Civil War in case you need some convincing: Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sharply disagrees and supports oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must pick a side.
Captain America: Civil War is, obviously, now playing in theaters.
