The first trailer for Code Vein debuted on Tuesday morning, giving us an early look at Bandai Namco’s next action RPG during the ongoing wait for the project’s 2018 debut. We continue to learn more about the publisher’s vampire-focused ARPG, including many of the fallen vampires we’ll be forced to fight when Code Vein hits consoles next year.
New information on Code Vein is still pretty hard to come by. That’s not a huge shock, given that we’re still somewhere between seven and 19 months removed from the project’s 2018 launch. We know the game will follow a vampire from the only city (Vein) yet to be overrun by the Lost, former vampires transformed and disfigured by their bloodlust. As a resident of Vein, it’s our job to continue the fight against the Lost. Other residents will also lend a helping hand as needed. Existing media for the game all features the same partner but a press release for the new Code Vein trailer confirms other vampires will also be available. Players will also be able to wield a variety of spells, known as Gifts, in their fight against the Lost. Provided they still have a few memories left to exchange.
Most of that information is regurgitated in this week’s Code Vein trailer. Narration seems to be provided by the game’s protagonist, who remains nameless at this time (as far we know). But we’re starting to get some idea of what his quest will be. Each new press release for Code Vein has mentioned a mysterious disaster. We also know that the Revenant, vampires who haven’t succumbed to their bloodlust, trade their memories for additional power. So it’s probably not a stretch to assume Code Vein will see players searching for both the origin of the disaster that wiped out life as we know it and a way for the Revenant to regain their lost memories. But it’s always possible we’re misreading the situation. Maybe memories will take the place of souls, the primary currency in Dark Souls, when Code Vein heads to consoles in 2018.
While there isn’t much new data in this week’s Code Vein clip, the trailer does provide early glimpses of several Lost vampires we’ll face in Bandai Namco’s next ARPG. Some of which might even be bosses. Enemies will come in all shapes and sizes in Code Vein, from towering ice demons to heavily-armored knights, but we still don’t know much about the game’s combat system. Bandai Namco says it will be weapon-based, rather than hand-to-hand combat, but most of the images and video footage we’ve seen thus far pits the Code Vein protagonist and his partner against a single enemy. But there have to be encounters that ask players to manage a more menacing number of enemies too, right?
