New information on Code Vein, the anime vampire action RPG announced earlier this year, continues to trickle out of Bandai Namco. This week we’re learning more details about some of the secondary characters we’ll team up with when Code Vein hits PC and consoles. Now we just have to hope Bandai Namco decides to start handing out these morsels a bit more quickly between now and 2018.
A lack of information about the world you’re exploring has become a hallmark of the Souls-like genre over the last few years. But it still feels like we know way less about Code Vein, a new IP trying to incorporate some new flavors into the industry’s favorite action-RPG recipe, than you’d expect for a project announced two months before E3 2017. We know the game will focus on an enclave of vampires who somehow trade memories for the power to defeat some unidentified threat. And we know the game will borrow heavily from hardcore action-RPGs, like Bandai Namco’s own Dark Souls trilogy, while also incorporating dungeon diving and other mechanics. And now we finally have more information on some of the characters we’ll meet in Code Vein.
This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine (translated by Game Jouhou) features background information on two potential allies from Bandai Namco’s next action-RPG (h/t Siliconera). The first, Mia Karnstein, is someone we’ve seen in a lot of the game’s early promotional media. But this week marks the first time players have been given a name and background information for the character. According to Famitsu, Mia is a Revenant -- Code Vein’s term for vampires who still possess some of their memories -- who’s been searching for Vein with her younger brother. She uses a bayonet and a Blood Veil (spell) that gives her a tail-like appendage with long reach. Bandai Namco and Famitsu also introduced Yakumo Shinonome, a retired mercenary who is beloved by the residents of Vein. Shinonome relies on an oversized sword that wouldn’t be out of place in most fantasy animes and his Blood Veil transforms the tail of his jacket into a wolf’s head that will lash out at nearby enemies.
