John Consantine, everyone’s favorite smartass, is getting his own animated series on CW Seed and a role in Legends of Tomorrow Season 3.
The first trailer showed Constantine summoning a bunch of demons to a church. He walks in, lights a cigarette and watches his con play out. Turns out, he made a deal with another demon who crashes the party and kills everyone. In true Constantine fashion, he gets away without lifting a finger. Blood, swearing and nicotine, don’t let the CW Seed brand fool you. This is aimed at adults.
Showrunner Phil Klemmer said John Constantine is “doing an exorcism" in the third season of Legends , and Rotten Tomatoes reports he will once again be played by Matt Ryan. The last time Ryan appeared in the Arrowverse was on Arrow when he purified Sara Lance’s soul to release her bloodlust after she was resurrected in the Lazarus Pit. But we’ve seen him since. Ryan voiced Constantine in the animated film, Justice League Dark.
The “Save Constantine” campaign has been in full swing ever since the NBC series was cancelled in 2015. In the same vein as Young Justice , all it takes nowadays is fan persistence. It’s unclear if Constantine will stick around for multiple Legends episodes, or just one. But it’s likely the latter considering the Legends will be in a different time zone each week attempting to fix the timeline.
The Constantine animated series premieres in early 2018. It’s executive produced by David S. Goyer, who worked on the live-action Constantine, and Greg Berlanti, who is behind CW’s most popular shows The Flash and Arrow. Sarah Schechter of Legends of Tomorrow and Butch Lukic of Justice League Action are also producers. The series is written by J.M. DeMatteis (Justice League Dark) and directed by Doug Murphy (Young Justice) .
