A new trailer for Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel is out this week, as we continue counting down to the expansion’s late October debut, giving fans an early look at the player-versus-player (PVP) action that will be prevalent in the upcoming Dark Souls 3 DLC. There’s also a pretty major new feature being introduced in Ashes of Ariandel: three-on-three team battles.
Temporary partnerships are nothing new in Dark Souls . The community has been coming to its own aid for years, with more experienced players charging into battle alongside those struggling with a particular boss or figuring out where to go next. Sure, there were plenty of players who’d troll their fellow player, ambushing them during boss encounters or difficult portions of the map. But you’d be surprised how friendly things tended to be. But it looks like that could change when Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel debuts later this month, based on the latest trailer, and things could get quite a bit more contentious in the coming months.
It’s not clear why Bandai Namco and FromSoftware believe PVP will play such a major role in the upcoming expansion — though we wouldn’t be shocked to see some new reward doled out to those who rise to the challenge — but the two companies did confirm the focus would also bring the introduction of a major new feature. Details on team battles remain scarce at this time; however, the video does seem to confirm team size (three players per side) and it doesn’t look like team composition will be restricted by your character’s choice of covenant.
Despite focusing primarily on PVP, the new Dark Souls 3 DLC trailer does give us brief snippets of footage from its solo content, too. It’s only a few seconds worth, focusing primarily on bosses from the base game and expansion, but it’s better than nothing if you’re the kind of player who tries to avoid human contact in Dark Souls games. But you probably can’t expect much more than that from a preview clip designed to promote the expansion’s PVP content.
