Will Daughters of the Dragon be a large part of Iron Fist Season 2? Marvel

When Marvel Television VP Jeph Loeb gets on stage, fans expect surprises. The Defenders panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con did not disappoint. Loeb confirmed Iron Fist Season 2, not a surprise, but then he teased a certain dynamic duo known to comic fans.

“A friend of Colleen Wing’s may be coming by, and that makes me a little Misty.”

Marvel fans have been waiting for this Daughters of the Dragon pairing ever since Misty Knight was introduced in Luke Cage and Colleen Wing in Iron Fist. They are a fan-favorite duo in the comics, briefly featured as a team on their own and then as supporting characters in Power Man and Iron Fist. As of right now, they haven’t met each other yet, but Jessica Henwick told Player. One they will definitely get acquainted in the upcoming Netflix series.

“There is a scene that has all of us in the same room and that was crazy and a lot of fun. It’s sort of towards the end of the show,” Henwick teased.

Henwick doesn’t only mean she and The Defenders--Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil and Jessica Jones-- when she says ‘us.’ When we asked if Misty Knight would be there too, Henwick described the meeting in more detail. She clarified the entire ensemble is in attendance.

“Well, I mean I did just say there’s a scene that has all of us in the same room so it is possible that Colleen and Misty may approach one another and start talking to each other. I know the fans want it. It was part of the reason I loved Collen when I was researching the role and I saw Daughters of the Dragon and what that was,” she said. “It’s unlike anything on TV. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Yes, I think fans will be happy.”

Daughters of the Dragon was first referenced in Iron Fist episode 3 when Colleen Wing used the name as her alias in an underground martial arts tournament.. That really got fans thinking about what could come into play in The Defenders. In the comics, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight formed a duo nicknamed Daughters of The Dragon. Steel Serpent was the first to call Misty and Colleen Daughters of the Dragon. It stuck. Interestingly enough, Davos from Iron Fist is known as Steel Serpent in the comics. He’s a huge foil for Iron Fist and the last scene of the series showed him meeting with Madame Gao. This arc involving Daughters of the Dragon and Davos and The Hand could very well carry through to Iron Fist Season 2.

Like in the TV show, Colleen was a friend of Iron Fist when he first returned to New York. In the comics, she was rescued by police officer Misty Knight, which is how the two met and eventually became best friends. They formed a private investigation firm called Nightwing Restorations, Ltd. Misty and Colleen often worked with Heroes for Hire, Luke Cage and Iron Fist’s crime fighting business that became a significant story arc for both comic book characters. It spanned 75 issues from 1978 to 1986.

Henwick said there could be events in The Defenders that could compel her to find her own path separate from Danny Rand’s. When we first pick back up with Colleen, she’s in an interesting mental space.

“At the top of the season, Colleen is the one saying [to Iron Fist] ‘there have to be more people like you. We have to find them. Let’s get this show on the road.’ Then, when everything happens the way she planned, shes kind of like, ‘Oh, but then you don’t need me. How do I compete? I’m just a girl with a sword. I can't punch through doors. I’m not bulletproof.’ I think she kinda wants to slow it down a bit, which is really human and kind of sad. She’s so used to being Danny’s right hand man,” Henwick said.

This natural character development certainly makes sense in the scheme of Netflix’s grand plan. Fans have been waiting for Luke Cage and Iron Fist to team up Heroes for Hire-style ever since The Defenders was first announced, and that certainly leaves room for Colleen Wing and Misty Knight to develop a strong bond as well.

Colleen Wing was created by Doug Moench and Larry Hama. Misty Knight was created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones. The Defenders premieres on Netflix August 18.

The Defenders Has Huge Payoff Potential
If The Defenders succeeds in the end, it’s due to the intricacy in the way the writers have tied together each show and the commitment to character development above all else. Each episode is increasingly better than the one before it, and at this pace, the last four will will hit the ground running with huge payoff potential.
