Penn Jillette, the loud half of magician duo Penn and Teller, is looking to get back into the video game business with a reboot of his "classic" game Desert Bus. The notoriously terrible game is getting a make-over, and will be coming to VR platforms some time in the future.
"I'm working on a game. I'm working with Randy Pitchford, and we're going to do – and this is a big, big deal – we’re going to do a new Desert Bus and it’s going to be just for charities, so charities can use it to raise money," Jillette said on his Penn's Sunday School podcast.
As for what the project will eventually end up looking like, it seems Desert Bus will be part of a new bundle of games the magician is working on. "We're doing a couple other games. It’ll be a bundle; we’re talking to a bunch of people," Jillette said. "It'll probably be agnostic in terms of platform, and it’ll probably be for the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR."
Desert Bus, of course, is a joke of a game that was part of the never-released Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors. Players are forced to drive a regular bus down a straight desert road from Tuscan, Arizona to Las Vegas. The trip is done in real-time, so players are forced to sit through eight hours of nothing to finish the game. Naturally, players cannot pause or save their progress.
Desert Bus has since become a massive power for good with the raise of the organization Desert Bus For Hope. The team involved with the charity will play Desert Bus for as long as possible to raise money for the charity Child's Play. Last time the team raised money, it ended up playing Desert Bus for 159 hours straight, raising more than $600,000.
