It’s been a big week for the Destiny community, with Bungie finally pulling back the curtains on the game’s next expansion, but the Destiny: Rise Of Iron release date won’t be nearly as exciting for those still playing Destiny on a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

Just as many gamers feared, Thursday’s Destiny: Rise Of Iron reveal also brought confirmation that the next Destiny expansion is being developed exclusively for the PS4 and Xbox One. While this undoubtedly means the next batch of content can better-utilize current generation hardware, it also means a significant portion of the community is being left out in the metaphorical cold. But a follow-up blog post from the Destiny dev team certainly makes it sound like Bungie has plan for those uninterested in buying a new console.

“This Fall, you’ll still be able to play Destiny on legacy generation consoles, but that journey will occur on a separate path,” the team wrote . “Up to this point, player progression between current and legacy consoles in the same family has been shared by each account. This summer, that experience will fork into two parallel experiences that will no longer share progression.”

Unfortunately, the studio stopped short of spelling out exactly what this will mean for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners. Bungie never says outright that it won’t develop additional content for the older platforms. Those who decide to upgrade to the PS4/One before September will have the opportunity to transfer their characters, within the same console family, and there don’t appear to be any plans to release Rise Of Iron on “legacy” consoles at any point. But it’s not clear whether there will be additional content for the PS3/360 or if those players will be with Destiny:The Taken King until they’re ready to buy new hardware.

Destiny: Rise Of Iron is being developed for PS4 and Xbox One. The next Destiny expansion debuts on September 20.
