After last month’s art leak, we’re not sure anyone is still questioning whether or not Rise Of Iron will be the name of the next Destiny expansion, which will be revealed by Bungie on Thursday morning. That said, if you still weren’t convinced, a new trademark filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office should remove any doubt about the title of Destiny ’s next expansion.
We’ve known for several months now that Activision and Bungie planned to release a major new Destiny expansion before the end of the year. According to older leaks, the two companies were originally planning to release a proper Destiny sequel by this point in the franchise’s life. But it seems like the current market response -- simultaneously one of the most beloved and panned games on the market -- has driven Bungie to focus on the current iteration of its shared-world shooter before trying to convince the general public to buy Destiny 2.
According to the website for the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Activision filed a new trademark application on May 31 to use the phrase “Rise Of Iron” to market media in a variety of mediums. The list includes interactive game software, instructional guides, Halloween costumes, graphic novels, downloadable ring tones and cosmetic pins (just to name a few). Following the discovery, there can be little doubt that Destiny: Rise Of Iron will be announced on Thursday.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be anything else we can learn about the new Destiny expansion from this week’s trademark application. But at least we won’t have to wait much longer to get new information straight from the source. Bungie has already confirmed plans to reveal the next Destiny expansion on Thursday, via a live stream on the studio’s Twitch channel scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. (PST) that morning.
Destiny: Rise Of Iron is believed to be in development for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The next Destiny expansion is expected to debut sometime this fall and will be formally revealed by Bungie on June 9.
