There were no shortage of reasons to get excited about the PlayStation Press Conference this year: from an amazing new look at Horizon Zero Dawn to the world’s first jaw-dropping look at Insomniac Games’ newly revealed Spider-Man project. Even those who prefer games that emphasize storytelling over action have something new to look forward to, thanks to Detroit: Become Human, the next big project from Quantic Dream.
Based on the game’s latest trailer, Detroit: Become Human transports players far into the future, to an era where mankind hasn’t just mastered the art of creating artificial intelligence. We’ve pretty much enslaved it. Androids are a normal part of human life and the men, women and children who encounter them on a daily basis have come to expect nothing short of absolute obedience from their robotic creators. But sometimes the androids stop doing what they’re told and, in the new Detroit: Become Human gameplay trailer, we get a startlingly clear idea of what that means for any humans who happen to be nearby. Spoilers: it isn’t pretty.
It’s still not clear what we can expect from the moment-to-moment action in Detroit: Become Human. We wouldn’t be surprised to learn Quantic has packed the game with action-filled moments, like lengthy shootouts or brawls with other androids, but the only thing we know for certain is that Detroit will rely on a branching storyline that’s instantly reminiscent of the award-winning Until Dawn. In fact, the developer showed half a dozen entirely unique outcomes for a scenario that, at first glance, doesn’t look like it has more than two. And we’re not just talking easy, cosmetic changes like swapping out the character who lives/dies in a given scene.

Detroit: Become Human is in development exclusively for PlayStation 4. There’s currently no timeline for the game’s debut.
