It took less than a week for Tom Clancy’s The Division to claim the first-week sales record for a new IP, Ubisoft confirmed. And, the game didn’t even need a full seven days to break the $325 million record set by Destiny back in 2014.
Ubisoft’s internal sales numbers aren’t the only records Tom Clancy’s The Division is breaking during its first days on the market. The latest offering from Massive Entertainment needed just five days to rack up $330 million in sales, based on estimated worldwide revenue, according to a new press release. That figure puts it more than $5 million ahead of Destiny, with two days to spare, virtually guaranteeing we’ll see a cornucopia of new content for The Division over the next few years.
The number is particularly impressive when you consider The Division launched on fewer platforms than its predecessor. Destiny remains available on PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, while The Division is only available on PC and next-gen platforms. Unfortunately, Ubisoft seems to be taking a page out of Activision’s book because the company has yet to reveal how many copies of The Division were sold during its first week on the market.
Sales figures aren’t the only big Division news of the week, either. Massive posted the first of what will apparently be an ongoing series of developer updates, called “State of the Game”, that give the studio a a chance to share some of its development plans with the community. This week, The Division dev team says it’s working hard on the game’s next patch, which will presumably address some of the bugs players encountered during their first week. While we don't have an exact timeline for the release of the Division patch, Massive says it plans to release the update sometime next week.
