Electronic Dance Music fans won’t have to reply on Beatport or SoundCloud for access to the latest favorite DJ mixes, unofficial remixes and mashups. Apple has announced a partnership with Dubset Media Holdings to bring this kind of content to Apple Music, Billboard reported Thursday.
While making new versions of popular songs is a fun pastime for professional and recreational DJs, copyrights and licensing present a difficulty when distributing music on paid services like Apple Music. Many in the music industry have spoken out against artists being paid only a small portion of the royalties earned on various streaming services, including Apple Music. However, Apple and Dubset hope to help artists and record labels get the proper credit and payment for material used in various remixes, mashups and DJ sets.
Dubset plans to use a technology called MixBank , which can discern different content within one mix, remix or mashup file, according to Billboard. This will allow Dubset to pay artists and record labels for their original material. In its partnership, Apple will pay Dubset for access to music that has been scanned through MixBank, which will then be used to pay royalties .
There is no word on when EDM fans can expect to see the latest mixes on Apple Music; however, artists like Steve Aoki have told Billboard that the partnership is a positive step, which will help artists monetize their original content while being creative with new mixes and remixes.
