For the past couple of years, the Dota 2 competitive scene in North America had Evil Geniuses occupying the top spot. Now, that appears to be changing in the new DPC season. Right now, the top spot has Quincy Crew and Team Undying. These two teams are looking good for the first Major of the new season.
So what exactly happened? How did two teams overtake EG in the new DPC Season?
The Fall of EG
Since winning TI5, the team has done rather well in many tournaments. They’ve managed to finish third in two other TI tournaments, for example.
When Valve introduced a new format for the competitive scene, it appeared that EG didn’t have a problem with it and had a strong showing. They finished first on Season 1 of the DPC 2021. They had second-place finishes in the two major tournaments and in Season 2.
EG was one of the strongest teams to join TI10 and was predicted by many to have a high-place finish. However, it seems that they faltered, leading to their elimination in the second round of the Lower Bracket.
That disappointing finish likely prompted two of their players to leave the team. Tal “Fly” Aizik is now in Southeast Asia with Talon Esports while Daryl Koh “iceiceice” Pei Xiang signed up with Team Secret.
While the team did manage to grab two-time TI champion Jesse “JerAx” Vainikka, it seemed there wasn’t enough time for the team to come together. Still, at fourth place, it’s not really that bad.
The Crew Takes Over
With EG still looking for their groove, it was the right moment for the other teams to shine. One of these was Quincy Crew. They had a strong performance during the last season by giving EG a run for their money. In Season 1 of DPC 2021, they only lost the top spot in a tiebreaker. Their only problem was that they couldn’t place higher in the two major tournaments. At TI10, they finished at the same rank as EG.
For this new season, the team is looking good so far and their challenge is now winning the Majors.
The Undying Rises
Another team to keep your eyes on is Undying. Considering that they were only formed for DPC 2021, their performance is truly impressive. They had consistently finished behind EG and QC.
Undying joined TI10 through the qualifiers where they dominated their opponents. By dominated, we mean not losing a single match. With the roster still intact, this team truly has a great future ahead of them.
