It’s Drizzy season. On Saturday, Drake confirmed the official release date for his upcoming studio album, Views from the 6. Dropping on April 29, Views is Drake’s first legitimate LP since 2013’s Nothing Was the Same (If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and What a Time to be Alive were both mixtapes). To mark the occasion, Drake has been ramping up the anticipation, going as far as to showcase billboards in Toronto declaring “The 6 God is watching.” Now, Drake has borrowed even more movie marketing tactics with the release of a trailer for Views from the 6. Take a look below:
I can’t recall if I’ve ever seen a trailer for a musical album, but nonetheless, Drake’s version is pretty cool. The 30 second clip juxtaposes the Toronto-born rapper’s past and present, which feels quite intimate and personal. There are shots from his childhood seamlessly edited with the Drake of now, and the contrast is quite striking. It’s certainly resonating with the fans - the Views from the 6 trailer has amassed over 100 thousand likes and retweets at the time of writing.
Drake also made waves with the release of a new verse for the recently debuted ‘Pop Style.’ A rehash of Jay-Z’s much maligned two line verse, Drake seemed to address the haters with an entry of his own. It’s definitely longer, but not much better, and maybe Jay-Z was on to something with his understanding of brevity. It’s not yet clear which version of ‘Pop Style’ will feature on Views from the 6. For now, check it out via Complex here.
